I joined the board of Gorebridge Community Development Trust in October 2007 in order to help the trust in the design and procurement of a new community centre for Gorebridge, an ex-mining town in rural Midlothian. The Midlothian Development Plan plans for the population of Gorebridge to expand from 5,000 to 10,000 and yet the only substantial community building in Goregridge was closed in 2009.
GCDT embarked on a series of financial, environmental and architectural consultations to discover whether it would be feasible to convert an existing Victorian school in Gorebridge which the Trust currently runs. It was agreed that it would be better to build in on a nearby site with a high street frontage and in a pivotal location linking the church, library. primary school and potential retail site opposite.
Lee Boyd were appointed as architects and took over the project management of the design team. Until their appointment I was acting as project manager.
The capital cost of the building has now been secured from several funders including the Big Lottery, Scottish Investment Fund and Midothian Council. All the funders are fully supportive of the scheme.
