Halvorsen Architects were asked to replace an existing lean-to extension and remodel the interior of part of a Georgian house in Lasswade, Midlothian. All the internal walls in the area concerned were removed and a new purpose-made stair installed. The floor to ceiling glazing and open-plan hall/stairwell allow maximum light inside where there had been dark narrow passages.

The new stair and external framing to the windows is made entirely of American White Oak. The timber cladding is locally sourced European Larch.

The stair was designed to fit in a relatively tight space and be a feature in its own right, providing display shelves on the lower steps.
