The client lived in a one bedroom second floor flat of a Victorian tenement block. He wanted a second bedroom and a place to work from home. He was also concerned about the hall and corridor which were dark and cramped.

The roof was extended to accommodate a master bedroom. The hallway was enlarged and lit from new windows to such an extent that it has become the heart of the flat. It extends vertically from a new entrance on the first floor up to the new attic floor. The new stair is steel using industrial style grille treads. This was done for economy and to make it as light as possible in the relatively small space. The grille treads allow light to pass through them and create interesting shadows on the walls.

The additional rooms are enlarged landings off the stairway. The first is a study and the second a reading area - bookshelves and a bench.
