The client asked Michael Hopkins & Partners to design a new Underground station at Westminister for the Jubilee Line Extension. The scheme incorporates a new ticket hall, new District and Circle line level, Jubilee Line platforms at lower levels and a large escalator 'box' interchange between levels. The District and Circle lines had to remain substantially unaltered and continue in operation throughout the construction period.

The design of the new station is interrelated with Portcullis House, the new parliamentary building on the site above ground.

The design expresses the massive scale of the structure, exposing the rough faces of the concrete diaphragm walls of the box. The lightweight steel structures of the escalator enclosures scissor through the space.
