client Genesis (J&T) Ltd (Trading as Happy Days Nurseries)
contract value £160,000
area 40 sq. m and 45 sq. m.
Happy Days nursery commissioned Halvorsen Architects to provide further accommodation for 3-5 year olds at two of their Midlothian nurseries, in Dalkeith and Hardengreen branch.
In each case we proposed a detached building – a playful take on a timber cabin – located away from the main nursery in a wooded part of the garden. Both have been designed to have a temporary feel and can easily be moved. Both are raised off the ground, using pile foundations so as not to disturb the tree roots, and each has a south-facing deck.
The north facing elevations are to be clad in brightly coloured profiled metal that wraps around and forms the roof. The other sides will be clad in untreated locally sourced larch with large windows and glazed doors to the South.
Planning permission has been approved for both buildings.
