The clients for this residential extension had recently returned from living in France and Switzerland and wanted to introduce the same quality of light and open-plan living in a modern style that they had enjoyed there.
The rear of the house faces East – the only direction we could extend. Therefore as well as a large extent of floor to ceiling glazing we also introduced several large roof lights. We also took the outside walls right up to the boundary thereby creating a small wall to the West where one more full height glazed panel has been introduced to let in the afternoon sun.
The challenge for the architect was to comply with building regulations when the extent of glazing far exceeded that normally allowed (in terms of heat conservation). This was done by a combination of measures including using fully glazed external style doors in the large openings between the new extension and the original house.
The result is a clean modern shell which wraps around the house bringing in an abundance of light from many directions.
