This is an extension to a Georgian sandstone house in Midlothian, using a timber frame, timber cladding and large areas of glass. The cladding is Siberian Larch – a popular cladding material with architects because of its durability, cost and more consistent texture than its Scottish counterpart. The timber is untreated and will turn silver-grey over a few years. This is popular as it blends in more with the sandstone and is maintenance free.
The exposed timber frame and joinery are of the same Siberian Larch to unify the two separate extensions (on the ground and first floors) and to minimise the number of new materials.
The ground floor has been substantially remodelled and had a kitchen extension. There is a a bedroom extension on the first floor.
