Space saving design

Originally, the intention was to raise the roof of this modest Georgian home – a converted barn on a steading in Midlothian – to provide more accommodation for a growing family. Then the building materials price hike hit, following Brexit and other events, and the proposal became unaffordable. Instead, we had to fit as much as possible under the existing roofline. This was challenging but we managed to provide a generous bedroom, bathroom and hallway that will double up as a play area. The ground floor was remodelled to provide a large open-plan living area.

Natural materials were used throughout, including sheep’s wool insulation and wood fibre board, to maintain the breathability of the external skin as close as possible to that of the original building.
