area new build 15 sq. m.; remodelled area 90 sq. m.

The client asked Halvorsen Architects to open up and enlarge the dark ground floor of their listed Grade II Georgian terraced house in Inverleith. This was done by removing several internal walls, especially around the stairwell, and extending into the garden as much as was permissible.

A fire suppression (sprinkler) system installed throughout the house meant more walls were able to be removed than is usual, which helped achieve the spaciousness that the client desired.

Wherever possible windows were introduced or enlarged with triple glazed units, including over the main stairwell. The large overhangs of the new garden room prevent overheating in summer and give the extension a more elegant profile.
